NAS Tournament Results Perth Rd 1 - 4th May 2008

Great day of competition and sportsmanship
Welcome to NAS Round 1

Martial art schools from all over Perth converged on the Belmont Oasis Leisure centre for round 1

The first round of competition for Perth began at 9.00 a.m. with a welcoming speech from the Vice President NAS, Mr James Casey

The action was non stop throughout the day with some excellent performances from various martial art schools. It was also great to see all martial art codes showing great respect to each other in and outside of the ring during the day’s competition.

The Pee Wees got off to a great start and won the applause and hearts of everyone for just being out there on the floor having a go.  Tristan Tsouris & Hunter Hadfield both of Josh Moore’s Martial arts fought out the final in this division… nerves showing during this match, in the end Tristan was awarded first place,

The Female12 – 14 yrs Continuos sparring kept the referees on the ball, these young competitors were all over the ring ducking and weaving, at the end of each bout there was excitement for those who won and tears for those that lost.  In the final Antonia Schmitz GKR came up against Amber Burgess Great Southern M/A Academy, Antonia was just to quick on the day scoring excellent front kicks and reverse punches taking home first place.

Demonstration and weaponry divisions had big numbers on the day.  Standouts in the junior’s weaponry Ronan Carroll Shuhari Karate gave an excellent performance of bow to take out first place; senior weaponry was taken out by Gen Chin also of Shuhari Karate winning the applause of the spectators for a fine demonstration

After lunch the men and women’s divisions got off to a great start. Standouts in the finals, Male Novice Continuous sparring, Jeremiah Toster, Shobukan Shot Ryu and Matthew Stampalia, Rod Powers Kickboxing fought out a nail biter with neither competitor backing off, a draw saw both guys go at it for another round, Jeremiah put the pressure on using the ring to his advantage, scoring with excellent spinning kicks and hand combinations taking first place

The final of the men’s advanced continuous sparring saw a very sharp Daniel King up against team mate Nathan Davis both of Perth Wing Chun, Daniel managed to avoid Nathan’s lighting-dash fast attacks, countering with his own back fist and leg combinations to stay a head and take first place.  In the final of the women’s open divisions was dominated by two competitors, Sonya Payne and Aida Tabakovic both of GKR, Sonya proved just a little too strong and sharp on the day taking first place

Virginia and I wish to thank all staff and officials who gave their time unselfishly to make this day a great success.  Special thanks to WA Technical Director, Mr Rick Gherardi

What made you become an NAS Official?
Mr Casey put out a call for people to volunteer and I wanted a better understanding of what we were being judged on so I said yes.  I enjoy Refereeing & judging at NAS events, I find it is professionally run and have met a great bunch of men and woman who take pride in what they are doing.

Last year (2006) in the Western Australian NAS State Championships, where I won first place in point sparring for my age group.

How did you find out about the NAS competition?
I came across an advertisement while reading Blitz magazine.

What do you like about the NAS competition?
I appreciate the friendliness of the event and the fact that different styles can come together with common interest, the emphasis being on competing. After all, without competitors there is no event.

Your comments on the refereeing, do you find the NAS to be fair and none biased?
I think that refereeing is always going to be a difficult job. A referee can only see what is visible to him or her. If a call looks erroneous from another person’s point of view, they must consider that it might just be the point from which they are viewing. I don’t think any referee or official would be intentionally impartial.

Name some of your up-coming champions from your club and how they are placing in the NAS competition…..
In all honesty I believe that each student from the club that competes has the potential to be an up and coming champion, although we do seem to have a certain amount of success in most divisions. Our focus is on enjoying the day. Nothing says winner, more, than a smile on a students face.

What are your future goals for your organisation?
My goals are to keep growing and expanding. Passing on the knowledge gained through training and continuing to learn.
