Training for Champions

NAS VICTORIA Round 1 March 1st 2008

Club / Organisation – Profile

Instructor Name: Shihan David Zarb – Art of Defense Australia
Style: Go ju Ryu Karate

How long have you trained?: 39 years

Location of club & nights you train? Keilor & Bacchus Marsh. Daily – 7 days a week.

How did you find out about the NAS competition? Has been a national referee and judge. Many students over the years, including own children, have competed in tournaments over the years.

What do you like about the NAS competition? That any style can come & do anything & its accepted. It’s inclusive not exclusive. Caters for all different styles.

Your comments on the refereeing, do you find the NAS to be fair and non – biased? Some of them don’t know all of the rules and also need to practice before hand. Perhaps if they were paid, had proper training, different levels of recognition etc. then they may be more confident to raise the flag and blow the whistle. I see it as more a lack of experience & training rather than bias. Would like to see someone in charge of training refs & judges up to the expected level.

Name some of your up – coming champions from your club and how they are placing in the NAS competition….

We are not a sports based karate school, more a traditional karate school. We have just re entered competitions. Anyone who participates is a champion, you don’t have to come home with a trophy.

What are your future goals for your organisation? To have as many people participate in martial arts as possible. For everyone to be the best they can be. To encourage everyone from all walks of life to develop a love & respect of martial arts.

Club / Organisation – Profile

Instructor Name: Lyndal Ricketts – No Limits Mixed Martial Arts
Style: Kaizen Karate Do

How long have you trained?: 15 years, have had own school for 4 years

Location of club & nights you train? Brandon Park Primary School – Wheelers Hill

How did you find out about the NAS competition? Been part of NAS since I started. Received my black belt through Shihan Silvio Morrelli

What do you like about the NAS competition? Good opportunity for the kids to experience sparring with multiple styles of martial arts.

Your comments on the refereeing, do you find the NAS to be fair and non – biased? Definitely non biased. Occasionally when refs are new and learning how to score, it can be a little frustrating. Mainly for the younger competitors.

Name some of your up – coming champions from your club and how they are placing in the NAS competition…. Jayden Collins – 2007 Vic state champion – yet to compete today. Jordan Schneider – placed 1st in kata today & 3rd in points sparring. Kaleb Collins, Tristan Schneider, Brett Cahill, Matthew Heritage, Ryan Newey – for showing strong club spirit and competing today.

What are your future goals for your organisation? We are currently in the process of moving to a full time centre. Would love to see some of my students in the finals of the 2008 NAS Championships!
