1. THANK YOU VICTORIAN COMPETITORS

VICTORIA NAS STATE FINALS, WHAT A DAY!

After a full year of training and competing in the first three rounds of the NAS, Victoria certainly showed spirit in the State finals held on 16th September 2018 at the Darebin Sports Centre.

155 competitors began arriving early with eager looks in their eyes to gain that title of STATE CHAMPION in the divisions they were to compete in. Following a request from the State Director Mr Vincent Busuttil, for all the Senior Black-belts to be at the centre by 7.45am, Enthusiastic Black-belts lined up for an early start to their divisions.

Following this, a warm welcome was given by Mr Jim Casey (President and CEO of NAS) and Mr Vincent Busuttil (State Director) to all the competitors and the spectators. A lovely surprise to the dedicated Officials and helper staff was the presentation of a thankyou medal that was put around the neck of each one by a junior competitor. This was given to show the appreciation of the NAS for the time given by these wonderful volunteers.

The National Anthem was sung by Louise Minch to recognize the importance of the day and then the competition took off. With four rings running consecutively, the action was a buzz all around the centre. Parents proudly stood as their children stepped into the ring to perform well practiced and aptly executed Forms. A feat in itself to be able to show skill and control in some difficult combination patterns. In the Pee Wee division, 3rd place went to; Zara Nasra from Lion Heart MMA, 2nd to Peter Thermos from Winged Dragon and the State Champion 1st Place was awarded to Alexia Duff from Northern Goju Karate.

At the other end of the Forms divisions the Veterans gave a lovely show of their skills in performing Forms and the winnings were awarded to the following, 3rd place, Mark Skelton (Red Dragon Martial Arts), 2nd place, David Lewis (Taido) and the State Champion 1st place, Simon Pedelty (Li-Kris-Han Kungfu). We look forward to seeing how all the competitors in the forms compete in the Nationals being held on the Gold Coast in December.

Of course the State finals would not be exciting if we didn’t have some fantastic rounds of sparring. There were many nervous but excited spectators and competitors watching and cheering as each round was fought and run to bring on some finger biting final rounds. Point Sparring will always force the warrior spirit from the competitor as they work to gain the points with their amazing array of technique. This was well and truly shown in the female 5th kyu to blackbelt 12 – 13yrs division. With 3rd place going to Makenze Thackray (Bendigo Kenpo Karate), 2nd Anisija Dimoski from Winged Dragon Martial Arts and the State Champion 1st place Paris O’Connell from Shin Bu Kai Victoria. These young ladies are certainly a force to be watched as they rise in their age and expertise. Well done ladies you did your school and selves proud.

Continuous sparring would have to be the blood stirrer of the competition as the competitor is on the mat for the full 1 ½ minutes and the need to continuously use expert ring craft to gain a win can be daunting. One division that showed such tenacity would be the 15 – 17 yrs males. After well fought rounds the winners came through and 3rd place was Mitchell Allen (Northern Goju Karate), 2nd Jacob Nocera (Proactive Team Freestyle) and the State Champion 1st place Callum Atwell from Northern Goju Karate.

The State Finals was also privileged to have a visit on the day from the original founder of the NAS, Mr Silvio Morelli who, expressed his delight in seeing so many up and coming martial artists on the mats giving their all in the spirit of the warrior.

NAS Victoria warmly congratulates ALL competitors from 2018 and is eager to see as many of them at the Gold Coast Nationals representing our fabulous State in TEAM VICTORIA. Don’t forget to get booked in early and we will see you there.
