Rd1 South Australia 10th April 2011
The dreary weather did not affect the number of competitors or their eagerness to showcase their skills at the South Australian NAS round 1 held at Campbelltown Leisure centre
Approximately 100 competitors, representing a number of different styles, were welcomed by the vice-president of NAS/WASO Mr. James Casey.
During his speech Mr. Casey introduced Mr. Nick De Cristofaro and personally thanked him and his lovely family on behalf of the President Mr. Silvio Morelli for their support and dedication to the NAS and SA martial art community over the past 10 years. Mr. Casey presented Nick with two autographed martial art books as a token of appreciation...Nick will be staying on in an Official capacity to continue to help build the NAS in South Australia.
The level of talent on show was appreciated by the vocal group of supporters who urged their respective competitors on.
Success was shared between various martial arts styles, including Go Kan Ryu, Karate JiJitsu, Ryu Kon Karate Freestyle, Golden Knights and Shaolin Kung Fu, Shingokan Karate, Superior Martial arts, Zanshin Kai Kick boxing, Adelaide Tang Soo Do and White tiger Combined M/A just to name a few.
It was pleasing to see the number of competitors in the younger age groups and we can expect to see them become future Australian Champions as they develop and mature.
Some of the top performances in the junior divisions included Carly Forrest – White tiger combined M/A taking out placed first in Female Continuous 12-14 years runner – up Lucille Ann Lott – GKR. Finals point sparring 12-13 years was hotly contested taking out first place Lucille Ann Lott – GKR, runner up Vanessa Coppola Tang Soo Do.
10 to 11 year old divisions had huge number of competitors for the first round. Stand outs in forms (10th to 6th Kyu) finals taking out first place James Brown KUA, runner up Stephen McAvaney – White Tiger Combined M/A
Go Kan Ryu fared well in the Male continuous 15 to 17 years division taking out first and second Callum Boyd coming first, runner up Ben Tynan. Both boys worked the ring well with some excellent combinations and ring craft
The senior categories were once again strongly contested.
Forms, Black Belt Open were taken out by John Brown KUA with a polished performance runner up Cameron Sparks JKA Shotokan. The finals of point sparring was a real nail biter which kept the referee and judges on their toes and was a crowd pleaser taking out first place Jeremy Thompson GKR, runner up Cameron Sparks
Congratulations to all competitors, not just place-getters, on their conduct which reflected the true spirit of martial arts. Also, a tournament can not run smoothly without the huge input of the Referees, Judges and Table Officials and helpers...Many thanks!
Also special thanks to our first aider, Margaret Jaegar

Can you tell us what you like about the NAS competition?

Winning round one in 14-15 5th Kyu black belt category point sparring for the very first time I entered the NAS

My favourite technique in competition is a jumping Spinning hook kick because if executed perfectly it looks outstanding from most other techniques I believe.
