State Titles Queensland - 12th October 2014

 Queensland 2014 State Titles ended on a high for all attending!

 Excellent numbers of competitors from all over Southeast Queensland and Northern NSW attended the 2014 NAS Queensland State Championships, Carrara Stadium, Gold Coast. With around 29 different martial at styles attending, the day was set for non stop action.

 Clubs where out to qualify for state selection to 2014 NAS National Championships being held at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic centre, 29th & 30th November.

Highlights of the day’s competition

 

Officials prepared themselves for a long day of non stop action, Male black belt divisions where among the highlights of the morning with some real standouts. Male black belt forms Khai Tran (Seishin-Ruy Karate) won the votes from all judges with an excellent form/kata to take 1st place, 2nd place going to Phillip Barbaro (Aust Institute of M/A), 3rd place Steven Taylor (Seishin Zen Ryoku). Male black belt point sparring final was a heated affair with Mark Stone (Seishin Zen Ryoku) coming up against Khai Tran (Seishin-Ryu Karate). Both fighters exchanged excellent combinations during the bout scoring points from the judges, midway through the match Mark being the much taller fighter used his reach to his advantage scored in quick succession to pull away on points to take the match, 2nd place Khai Tran, 3rd place Martyn Fleming (Bonsai Karate)

Veteran’s form division was another highlight of the morning with some excellent performances. Garry Edwards (Shito Ryu Redland) was too strong on the day winning all votes from judges to take out 1st place, 2nd place going to Julie-Ann Bell (Bubishi M/A), 3rd place Michelle Stuart (Seishin Ryu Karate). Finals female point sparring saw Julie-Ann Bell (Bubishi M/A) take out 1st place, 2nd place Michelle Stuart (Seishin Ryu Karate), 3rd place Deborah Lindsay (Success M/A). In the men’s final Shayne West (Success M/A) proved to strong on the day taking out 1st place, 2nd place Martyn Fleming (Bonsai Karate), 3rd place Richard Marlin (Success M/A)

The junior demonstrations/weaponry was in full swing with big numbers of competitors. Synchronised team forms saw a clean sweep 1st, 2nd & 3rd going to teams KenshinKan. Traditional weaponry was taken out by Ethan Airs (Shito Ryu Redlands) with a strong bow kata, 2nd place going to Domonik Lowe (Haidong Gumbo), 3rd place Curtis Rck (Bubishi M/A) Demo/Creative weapons saw a strong performance from Domonik Lowe (Haidong Gumbo) taking out 1st place, 2nd place going to Shaun Myers (Kenpo Karate), 3rd place Gabrielle Uren (Phoenix Arts)  

Finals 7 years & under divisions, taking out 1st place in the forms was Masashi Tetsuo (KenshinKan), 2nd place going to Samantha Densmore (Seishin Zen Ryoku), 3rd place Thomas Bean (Spirit First M/A). Final point sparring saw Jacob Richter (Freestyle Kungfu) come up against Masashi Tetsuo (KenshinKan)…talk about non stop action for 1 ½ minutes both these competitors went point for point right to the bell in the end Jacob lunged forward scoring with a reverse punch to take the point and match, 2nd place Masashi, 3rd place Sean Ly (Freestyle Kungfu) 

Finals of the 10 to 11 years 5th Kyu – Black belt point sparring division, Stephen Williams (KenshinKan) came up against Trinity Henrickson (GKR), Stephen was too quick on the day outscoring Trinity to take the match, 3rd place going to Lachlan Brennan (GKR)  

Female black belt division’s saw Pania Casey Williams (KenshinKan) take out the forms competition, 2nd place going to Kristel Suess (Tetsuya Karate), 3rd place Karen Young (Seishin Zen Ryoku). Final of the point sparring was a fiery affair with all girls out to take State titles status in the end Kahlia Smith (Bubishi M/A) proved a point she has what it takes to be a contender for female champion of champions taking out 1st place out scoring all her opponents, 2nd place going to Karen Young, 3rd place to Nicki Hodkinson (KenshinKan)  

Male advanced continuous final saw Steven Taylor (Seishin Zen Ryoku) come up against Edward Hope (Chinese Kickboxing) who travelled all the way from WA to qualify for up coming Nationals in Melbourne, both men worked the ring well and were cautioned by the referee to control their contact, midway through the match Steven used the ring to his advantage outscoring his opponent and taking the match, 2nd place going to Edward, 3rd place Luke Parker.
